Join us at e-flux on Wednesday, March 14, at 7pm for a screening of Keren Cytter’s newest film Middle of Beyond (2017, 87 minutes). Following the screening, the filmmaker will be in discussion with artist Jen Liu and writer and curator Kathy Noble.
Middle of Beyond blends fiction, news clips, and animation recounting ten days in the life of Malte Krumm, a month after the latest US elections. The film depicts the numbness of a world flooded by information and social media activity, where the borders between reality and illusion are crumbling and narcissism and self-promotion overshadow moral values. Based on a true story.
Keren Cytter is a New-York based video, film, installation, and performance artist. She studied at The Avni Institute in Tel Aviv, and was a resident at de Ateliers in Amsterdam. Cytter’s work has been exhibited in numerous international venues such as Tate Modern (London), the Kitchen (New York), MCA Chicago (Chicago), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), and Kunstverein München (Munich). She has participated in several biennials including Manifesta 7 (2008), the Venice Biennale (2009), and the Liverpool Biennial (2014).
Jen Liu is a New York-based visual artist working in video, painting, and performance on topics of national identity, labor economy, and the re-motivating of archival artifacts. In 2017 she received the Guggenheim Fellowship in Film/Video, and the NYFA/NYSCA Gregory Millard Fellowship in Digital/Electronic Media. She premiered her most recent work, PINK SLIME CAESAR SHIFT, in the 2018 Berlinale Forum Expanded.
Kathy Noble is a writer and curator. She curated the inaugural Art Night with the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, was a curator at Wysing Arts Centre, Head of Exhibitions at Nottingham Contemporary, and a curator at Tate Modern, where she organized numerous commissions, exhibitions, and performances. She writes regularly for magazines such as Artforum and Mousse, and has edited a number of books.
