Launch of Kelly Jazvac: Plastiglomerates, featuring Kelly Jazvac in conversation with Paige West

Join us at e-flux on Saturday, October 7 at 5pm to celebrate the launch of Kelly Jazvac: Plastiglomerates, the inaugural publication from Durable Good, featuring artist Kelly Jazvac in conversation with anthropologist Paige West starting 6pm.

Plastiglomerates considers how Jazvac’s sculptural practice fits amongst research in diverse fields: earth sciences, environmental activism, and cultural studies. The book features an interview between Jazvac and geologist Patricia Corcoran; essays by Jonathan Griffin and Kirsty Robertson; and new images by Kelly Wood.

Kelly Jazvac is a Canadian artist who works primarily with plastic waste. In so doing, her work probes the permanence of disposability. Recent exhibitions include Gallery TPW, Toronto; The Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; The Palmer Museum of Art, Penn State University; Parisian Laundry, Montreal; and Fierman Gallery, New York. Her work has been written about in e-flux Journal, Hyperallergic, The Huffington Post, Art Forum, The New Yorker, Border Crossings, Canadian Art, Magenta Magazine, C Magazine and The Brooklyn Rail. She is represented by Fierman Gallery.

Paige West is The Claire Tow Professor of Anthropology at Barnard College and Columbia University. Her broad scholarly interest is the relationship between societies and their environments. She has written about the linkages between environmental conservation and international development, the material and symbolic ways in which the natural world is understood and produced, the aesthetics and poetics of human social relations with nature, and the creation of commodities and practices of consumption. Since the mid 1990s she has worked with indigenous people in Papua New Guinea. She is the author of three books and the editor of five more, including Dispossession and the Environment: Rhetoric and Inequality in Papua New Guinea and Tropical Forests in Oceania: Anthropological Perspectives.
