Moderna galerija (MG+MSUM) is the Slovene national museum of modern and contemporary art. It consists of two venues, the Museum of Modern Art, Cankarjeva 15, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Maistrova 3. The former holds the national art collection spanning the time from Impressionism to the early1990s; the core of the latter is Arteast 2000+, a pioneering collection of Eastern European art. The main objective of both, taken together, is to systematically collect, study and publish documentary and archival materials pertaining to modern and contemporary art in Slovenia, as well as to maintain and develop a rich photographic and digital archive. MG+MSUM is an important educational and research institution for 20th century art in Slovenia, running various public programmes aimed at popularising as well as analysing and questioning modern and contemporary art. It holds the most extensive specialised museum library in the field of modern and contemporary art in Slovenia and a restoration/conservation department, whose role is to conserve, restore, document, research and maintain works from the museum’s collections and to prepare works for temporary exhibitions. The MG+MSUM produces a wide range of publications, largely related to its exhibitions, collections and archives.
