The Sapporo International Art Festival (SIAF) is an art festival launched in 2014 that happens every three years in Sapporo, the capital city of Hokkaido, Japan against a backdrop of breathtaking natural scenery. In 2013, the city became the first in Asia to be designated a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts.
The third edition SIAF2020 was cancelled due to the global spread of COVID-19. However upon cancellation, it launched the special program “SIAF2020 Plans and Ideas” that ran during the original festival dates to share through the various media the detailed plans developed for SIAF2020. The final outcome of the program, the documentation book, was published in March, 2021.
The next SIAF, to be held in winter 2024, will inherit and expand upon the policies and plans for the cancelled SIAF2020, which was planned to introduce works and projects based on themes of cold climate, snow and the culture of northern regions. SIAF will continue to promote local creativity through introducing contemporary art and media art while publicizing what the city has to offer across Japan and elsewhere.
