Studio for Immediate Spaces

The Studio for Immediate Spaces (SIS) at Amsterdam’s Sandberg Instituut is open for future participants who seek to critically and productively shape and reflect the world around them beyond disciplinary categorization. SIS presents a two-year Master’s program in spatial practices (MA Interior Architecture, 2024–26) that investigates how ecology, society, technology, politics and economy manifest in space. In a world shaped by lifestyles based on externalisation—from ex-traction to e-mission—SIS follows an idea of The Great Interior: There is no outside, we’re all in it together.

Guided by a multidisciplinary team of professionals from the fields of architecture, art, activism, futurology, and urbanism, the objective is to explore possibilities to work in and on space, to test collaborations, to embrace post-disciplinarity, to explore artistic research and creative output. SIS seeks to refine relevant spatial practices, focusing on wicked contemporary issues such as anthropogenic ecological collapse, socio-economic division, and heightened political polarization.

SIS invites forward-looking students, curious practicioners and undisciplinary spatialists with backgrounds in architecture, art and design, anthropology, sociology and beyond, to develop and refine an engaged and emancipated practice interfering with current spatial perception and production. At a time when the world urgently requires uncompromised practices to contribute to a more just and beautiful world, SIS’ ambition is to foster works not to be exhibited, but to exist.
