MICA Grad Show 2024 presents on-campus and community engagements showcasing the work of MFA and MA students across the College’s 14 internationally renowned graduate programs, demonstrating the ability of art to entertain, enliven, and educate.
From February through July, four distinct shows will highlight the breadth of scope and ambition fostered by MICA’s programs, and embodied through the work of the College’s cohort of artists, designers, filmmakers, educators, curators, and makers.
In collaboration with the Office of Graduate Studies, programs will host exhibition receptions and key events celebrating students’ thesis and capstone works, from the tangible conceptions of the fine arts and design students to the community-based accomplishments of the Social Design, MA, Community Arts, MFA, and Teaching, MA programs.
Soham Patil, a student in MICA’s Graphic Design, MFA class of 2024 cohort, was chosen twice for Student Space Gallery shows on MICA’s campus in his two years in the program—a coveted exhibition opportunity chosen by a selective jury of community stakeholders. Mount Royal School of Art Multidisciplinary, MFA students have found similar success: Sanah Brown-Bowers earned a spot in a Student Space Gallery show in 2023 before being selected for an MFA invitational at American University this year with fellow students Jeehee Yoo and Trisha Gupta. Cross program collaboration has also catapulted students into successful community engagements such as in the case of Dr. Antoinette Myers Perry, MFA ‘24 (LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting) with her solo exhibition at Spare Room Gallery which is being facilitated by the curation and directorial work of student Ringo Lisko, MFA ‘24 (Rinehart School of Sculpture).
Although MICA’s community and field based cohorts are not always aiming for solo exhibitions or invitationals, these programs have had a major impact through their community placements and have been producing a body of studio work and projects to present during Grad Show. The first of these shows (MICA Grad Show I), opening on February 23rd, will focus on MICA’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Nationally recognized for its successful approach to preparing art education professionals, MICA’s MAT program focuses on the notion that teaching is an art in itself and that the best art teacher is a practicing, accomplished artist. Highlighted alongside other fine arts programs in our third show (MICA Grad Show III), MICA’s Community Arts, MFA program also has an emphasis on the student’s art practice in collaboration with community based work. Many students have become a part of the Baltimore and surrounding communities through placements at various local non-profits, many in conjunction with Americorps and MICA’s Community Art Collaborative (CAC).
